Corgi Legend

Once upon a time, a very long time ago, Faerie folk flourished in the world of mortals. Each Spring they would select a desirable spot to hold Court until Samhaine's Eve in the Fall.One year, the Court had settled in the little country of Wales, in the southwest of Britannia. The Queen of the faeries wished to go riding up in the high places to look upon the world, but she had no proper steed. She commanded the Fool to her presence and bade him create a steed appropriate to her exalted status. Now, the Fool has a great deal of power in the Faerie Court, but he is not called the Fool for nothing. Naturally, he would do as his Queen commanded, but with a trick up his sleeve (or two). So, he considered his surroundings, sending his thought far and wide throughout the land. He considered many things that he found in this strange old place: the perilous mountains, the hollow hills, the pine woods with their swirling, mysterious mysts. He finally felt that he had collected together all the information he needed, and drew upon the fey energies native to this land. He gathered this energy to himself and combined it with his own considerable powers. Closing his eyes with the strain, he uttered one word, "steed", and pointed to the ground before him. There sat a young animal, which was in type familiar to the Queen, but quite strange. "But, this is very odd Fool", she said. "I asked for a steed worthy of my status, to take me up into the hills of this land, and you give me an odd little dog?". The Queen was quite familiar with the canine companions of mortals. "Ah," said the Fool, "but I have complied with your request, my Queen. Here before you is an animal who will be utterly devoted, undyingly loyal, fierce in its determination, independent in nature, familiar with all the landscape of this land, and well-suited to its climate." The Queen tried to find something wrong with this, but could not. She therefore accepted this creation from the Fool, mounted the young dog, and rode off into the hills. She had a most enjoyable day. The Queen was well-pleased. As Samhaine Eve approached and it was time to pack up and leave, the Queen asked the Fool what should be done with her steed, whom she had named Emrys, the Welsh name for "blessed". The Fool replied that Emrys should remain behind, as he was created from the fey energies of the Welsh landscape, he belonged to it. But so that the young dog would not become lonesome, the Fool created a mate, named Gwynnedd. The Faerie Court left Wales for some other, long forgotten place. Emrys and Gwynnedd, on the other hand, made a home for themselves up in the hollow hills of their land. In time, they were blessed with a litter of healthy, happy, gorgeous little pups. All went well until one day, two of the pups became separated from their family. It was said these pups were found by mortal children, who took them home and cared for them. They referred to the pups in their native tongue, and so these little dogs became known forever as...Corgis. The rest, as they say, is history. Whether this tale be true or no, who is to say? But the story, in part, has certainly been repeated often enough, by many different sorts of people, over an awfully long period of time. Odds are there's at least a grain of truth there. But if in doubt, ask a Corgi.

P.S. So what, you may ask, was the Fool's trick? Well, the Corgi personality, so pleasing and well understood by the Faerie folk, is sometimes a bit trying for us mere mortals... After all, the Lesser Corgi Society insists that corgis are stubborn, bossy, nosy, loud, continuously shedding little sausages. And so they are.
